The leather used for journal cover is manufactured by Horween Leather Company. Horween's leathers are made using the same techniques as generations ago, with only minor modern applications applied. Horween Dublin is a bovine leather with pullup effect - leather becomes lighter in color when you bent or fold it because oils and greases are displaced.
Full grain is the upper layer of the cow's skin, it is the strongest part of the hide. This leather type may include natural marks; these may be scars, wounds, stretch marks, fly bites etc.
